As a human collective, we love the animals we kill. Some take joy in their deaths, some grieve, but to most of us it is a sad mundanity, a collateral damage of our highways and our industries. There is a shock of bright eyes, a bump, and the car moves on.

The song Abstract (psychopomp) by Hozier is to me a song about the refusal to suppress one’s grief. A moment of compassion is contrasted by senseless violence, loss, and the indifference of passing cars. What does it cost us to numb ourselves, individually and collectively? What does it cost us to sit with grief, with guilt, and with death?
