This work will celebrate the courage and integrity of humanitarian aid flotillas, especially the Global Samud Flotilla, a group of boats attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. To me, the people of this flotilla as well as the ones who previously attempted to give aid to civilians by sea, are heroes. Many have been arrested, beaten, and prevented from delivering aid by Israeli forces. Samud can be translated as steadfastness. It is a way of life Palestinians embody in order to continue resisting against all odds. The support of the global community must also follow this principle, and remain steadfast in the face of cruelty.

I want to use my work to uplift those who are bringing me hope and who show me that many people still have kind hearts and willing hands. Visit the website for the Global Samud Flotilla here

I chose to accompany this piece with a quote that has been extremely impactful to me. “Wherever you are, whatever sand you can throw on the gears of genocide, do it now. If it's a handful, throw it. If it's a fingernail full, scrape it out and throw….We can refuse with our every breath and action. We must.” These words, by Rasha Abdulhadi, were written regarding the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, however the meaning can be applyed more broadly. No group of people should be targeted for extermination, and anytime this happens it is the responsibility of all of us to get in the way.

The materials under the piece were collected during the creation process. Stained glass making leaves behind small pieces of glass and lead, among other things. One of the things created is essentially sand; a mixture of tiny shards of glass, a bit of dust, and the grinding efforts of time and energy. It is not much, but it can still catch in the gears.
